The Rise of Electric Vehicles and the Growing Concern of Cyber Attacks

In recent times, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has skyrocketed. Just like traditional diesel or petrol cars require fuel, electric cars need a reliable charging infrastructure. Global sales of EVs have surged by approximately 60%, with a notable increase in the sales of electric passenger cars. However, as the popularity of EVs grows, so does the risk of cyber attacks targeting the charging infrastructure.

A recent report by Check Point Research, a cybersecurity company, highlights the security challenges that individuals may face due to the soaring demand for EVs. Industries are rapidly expanding, resulting in the opening of numerous EV charging stations on street corners and parking lots. Securing these new outlets from cyber attackers has become an increasingly difficult task. CERT-In, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has identified certain vulnerabilities in products connected to electric vehicle charging stations.

Cyber hackers possess the ability to exploit these vulnerabilities within EV charging stations. Researchers have already identified various weaknesses associated with them. One major concern is the hackers' capability to manipulate electricity supply, leading to fluctuations in power distribution. The report explicitly warns that these attacks can disrupt the functioning of the EV charging network, posing a significant threat. Hackers may gain unauthorized control of charging stations, potentially causing widespread disruption.

There is growing apprehension regarding the security of EV chargers. Unfortunately, the race-to-market approach has often resulted in inadequate cyber security measures for connected devices. EV chargers were typically viewed as an afterthought in terms of cybersecurity, as they were already fully integrated with existing infrastructure.

According to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the electronic systems supporting the charging and communication facilities of Electric Vehicle Supply Devices (EVSEs) are vulnerable to cyber security vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities leave EVSEs susceptible to attacks.

To address these concerns, it is crucial for EV manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers to prioritize cybersecurity measures from the outset. By implementing robust security protocols and conducting regular assessments, the risk of cyber attacks can be mitigated. Furthermore, collaboration between industry stakeholders, cybersecurity experts, and government agencies is essential to establish industry-wide standards and best practices.
