Cyber Attacks on the Rise in India: Protecting Our Digital Landscape

In recent years, India has witnessed a concerning surge in cyber attacks. On Tuesday, June 6, an attempted cyber attack targeted AIIMS, one of the premier medical institutions in the country, housing sensitive data of lakhs of patients, including numerous VIPs. This incident sheds light on the vulnerability of our digital infrastructure. A report by CERT-In revealed that a staggering number of cyber attacks, totaling Rs 12,67,064, were tracked last year. This report was also submitted to Parliament, highlighting the urgency of addressing this growing menace.

The Alarming Rise in Cyber Attacks

The figures speak for themselves, as the total number of recorded cyber attacks has steadily increased over the years. In 2018, there were 2,08,456 incidents, which escalated to 3,94,499 in 2019. Shockingly, these numbers surged to 11,58,208 in 2020 and further to 14,02,809 in 2021. This upward trajectory signifies the magnitude of the cyber threat and calls for immediate action to safeguard our digital infrastructure.

Everything is at Risk

It is disconcerting to realize that in today's era, every smart gadget we own can be easily hacked. Our homes are no exception, as hackers can manipulate various devices such as TVs, phones, computers, smartwatches, blood pressure monitors, and even treadmills. They can gain control remotely and pose a threat to our safety. Imagine the potential danger of a hacker taking control of your car or launching an attack against you. The severity of cybercrime cannot be underestimated, particularly concerning our national security.

Targeting the Healthcare Sector

The health sector has become a prime target for cyber attackers. According to MTaI, a think tank focusing on internet crime and cyber warfare, around 7.7% of all cyber attacks in 2021 were directed at the healthcare sector. While most of these attacks occurred in the United States, India ranked second in terms of targeted cyber attacks. It is worth noting that AIIMS has faced previous cyber attacks, emphasizing the vulnerability of crucial institutions within the healthcare sector.

Alarming Increase in Cyber Attacks

Globally, there have been over one billion cyber attacks, with India successfully preventing more than 500 million of them. However, the number of cyber attacks has increased by over 29% in 2023 alone, signifying the urgency to strengthen our cyber defense mechanisms.

Bolstering Cybersecurity Measures

Given the escalating threat landscape, it is imperative to take immediate action to protect our digital infrastructure and ensure the security of critical institutions and personal information. Here are some crucial steps that need to be undertaken:

Enhancing Cybersecurity Awareness: It is essential to educate individuals about the risks associated with cyber attacks and promote best practices for protecting personal information and online activities. Conducting regular awareness campaigns can significantly contribute to building a cyber-resilient society.

  2. Strengthening Institutional Cyber Defense: Institutions, both public and private, must prioritize cybersecurity measures. Robust firewalls, regular system updates, and frequent security audits can help identify vulnerabilities and prevent cyber attacks.

  3. Collaboration and Information Sharing: Encouraging collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement bodies, and private organizations is vital in effectively combating cyber threats. Sharing information on emerging cyber attack patterns and adopting a proactive approach can help mitigate risks more effectively.

  4. Investing in Cybersecurity Infrastructure: Adequate investment in state-of-the-art cybersecurity infrastructure is crucial to keep pace with evolving cyber threats. Funding research and development in the field of cybersecurity can result in innovative solutions and technologies to counter sophisticated attacks.

  5. Legal Framework and Cybercrime Laws: Strengthening existing cybercrime laws and enacting stringent

Cybercrime in Nagpur - Cyber Blackmailer Couple Arrested in Pune for Extorting Money

A sensational case of  cyber black mailing  and cheating has come to light in the city.  In this case registered at Pratap Nagar police station, the police have arrested 3 including the main accused IT professional husband and wife from Pune. Arrested accused includes Shatrughan Singh Tangral and his wife Manjusha along with Rahul Satyendra Jha, all three are residents of Pune. It is alleged that he stole source code and client's data from the director of a company based in Nagpur in the last 5 years and blackmailed them with rigging of about 9 crores.
