The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) in Odisha, India has taken a major step towards curbing cybercrime by disconnecting 51,260 fake SIM cards. The DoT used an artificial intelligence-based facial recognition tool called ASTR to identify and disconnect non-bonafide mobile connections. The tool was used to analyze the subscriber database of all Telecom Service Providers in the state, resulting in the identification of 52,088 suspected mobile connections. The concerned telecom operators re-verified these connections and found that 51,260 of them were fake and disconnected.

The DoT has also blacklisted 2,417 point of sales (PoSs)/SIM sellers who were involved in such fraudulent activities and has made police complaints against these individuals for further investigation and necessary action. This action is expected to send a strong message to those who are involved in such activities and will help in curbing the menace of cybercrimes.

Fake SIM cards can be used to commit a variety of crimes, including identity theft, fraud, cyberstalking, and violence.
