Centre for Cyber Operations and Security (CenCOPS): A Game-changer for Law Enforcement Agencies

CHANDIGARH: The Union defense minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for the Centre for Cyber Operations and Security (CenCOPS). This center, which is the first of its kind in India, will be equipped to stop or counter any cyber-attack on the data of local administration or to secure any crucial government data in the city.

CenCOPS will enable police forces of Chandigarh and neighboring states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal, to solve complex cybercrimes and strengthen their cyber security setup.

What is CenCOPS

The Centre for Cyber Operations and Security (CenCOPS) is a first-of-its-kind cybercrime centre in India that has been established to counter any cyber-attacks on the data of local administration or to secure any crucial government data in the city.

  • The centre will enable the police forces of Chandigarh and neighboring states to solve complex cybercrimes and strengthen their cyber security setup.

  • CenCOPS will offer various facilities, including data analytics and predictive policing, evidence collection and advanced forensics, cyber security and cybercrime investigation, and social media analytics and citizen outreach.

  • The project has been awarded to the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on a nomination basis under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme at an estimated cost of ₹88 crores.

  • The initiative will be completed within three to four months and will also include a training lab and advanced software and hardware installation to ensure cyber security.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ketan Bansal stated that it was Chandigarh police’s own initiative to have an advanced and well-equipped modern cybercrime center in the city. The Ministry of home affairs provided funds worth ₹22.35 crore, which has already been given to DRDO. The facility will have a training lab, and key software and hardware will be installed to ensure cyber security. The setup will be completed within three to four months.

CenCOPS will offer various facilities, including data analytics and predictive policing, evidence collection and advanced forensics, cyber security and cybercrime investigation, and social media analytics and citizen outreach. The data collected from various sources will be analyzed in-depth, which will help in predictive policing. The force will be deployed well in time at the appropriate places with the intelligence received from CenCOPS. Information being shared on various social media platforms will be analyzed, and strong intelligence inputs can be gathered from there to avoid violence. In case of a cyber-attack, alerts will be released immediately.

CenCOPS will be beneficial in the facial recognition of the anti-social elements in the city. The data of the defaulters or gangsters will be fed into the facial recognition system (FRS), and the moment a camera in the city captures the face, the system will generate an alert, which will help in timely policing.

How CenCOPS Is Going To Help Law Enforcement

The Centre for Cyber Operations and Security (CenCOPS) is set to revolutionize law enforcement agencies in the region, offering a wide range of advanced facilities and capabilities. Equipped with cutting-edge tools such as data analytics, predictive policing, evidence collection and advanced forensics, cyber security, and cybercrime investigation, as well as social media analytics and citizen outreach, CenCOPS aims to empower law enforcement agencies in solving complex cybercrime cases and fortifying their cyber security infrastructure.

One of the key benefits of CenCOPS is its ability to facilitate the timely deployment of police forces to the right locations through intelligence gathered from the center. By analyzing data from diverse sources, the center supports predictive policing efforts. Moreover, it actively monitors information shared on social media platforms, enabling the collection of valuable intelligence to prevent acts of violence. In the event of a cyber-attack, CenCOPS promptly issues alerts to mitigate potential damage.

CenCOPS also plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety through facial recognition technology. By inputting data of known offenders or criminals into the facial recognition system (FRS), any cameras in the city can immediately trigger an alert when their faces are detected. This capability significantly aids law enforcement agencies in responding to incidents promptly.

Overall, CenCOPS serves as a vital asset in bolstering the cyber security infrastructure of law enforcement agencies. It assists in resolving complex cybercrime cases, enables efficient deployment of police forces, and helps maintain regional law and order.
