92 Indian Government Websites Hacked in Past Two Years: MoS Chandrasekhar

 


In recent years, India has witnessed an alarming rise in cybersecurity incidents, with the latest revelation being the hacking of 92 government websites belonging to both the Centre and State Governments. This highlights the need for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data and critical infrastructure.

The Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has disclosed that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) observed over 14 lakh cybersecurity incidents in 2021 and 2022. The government has taken measures to notify affected organizations and coordinate incident response measures with service providers, regulators, and law enforcement agencies.

This blog post will delve into the cybersecurity landscape in India and the steps that need to be taken to ensure a secure digital future. We will explore the challenges faced by the government and the private sector in combating cyber threats and the importance of building a robust cybersecurity ecosystem.

CloudSEK, an Indian cybersecurity company, has noted the increasing prevalence of phishing campaigns targeting government agencies in India. Additionally, China has experienced a surge in cyberattacks, particularly by APT groups, in 2021. Threat actors often hack computer systems in different parts of the world to conceal their identity and use masquerading techniques and hidden servers.

The Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized the severity of cyberattacks, stating that they pose a significant threat to data confidentiality, integrity, and availability. These attacks can have a direct or indirect impact on the economy of businesses and service providers.

To combat these threats, the Indian government is taking various steps to enhance its cybersecurity posture, including developing a Cyber Crisis Management Plan for the Central and State Governments and vital sectors. The plan aims to address cyberattacks and cyberterrorism.

To enhance India's cybersecurity, CERT-In conducts regular training sessions for network and system administrators, as well as Chief Information Security Officers of government and critical sector organizations. They also provide alerts and advisories on recent cyber threats and mitigation strategies to secure computers and networks.

To create situational awareness about cybersecurity threats, the government established the National Cyber Coordination Centre. MoS Chandrasekhar added that mock drills are also conducted to assess the cybersecurity posture and readiness of government and critical sector organizations. So far, over 900 organizations from different sectors and states have participated in 74 drills.

MoS Chandrasekhar emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that the Internet is accessible, trustworthy, and accountable. The government is working on various legislations to protect India's online space. While acknowledging the need for vigilance against cyber threats, the minister also highlighted the government's proactive measures and initiatives. This should serve as a reminder for businesses and organizations to prioritize cybersecurity and take necessary precautions to safeguard against cyber threats, as attackers continually develop new strategies and exploit well-known flaws.

In conclusion, the increasing frequency of cybersecurity threats and website hacking incidents is a cause for concern, and governments must remain vigilant and take necessary measures to enhance their cybersecurity posture. The Indian government's efforts in this regard are commendable, and businesses and organizations should take heed and prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard against cyber threats.

Cybercrime in Nagpur - Cyber Blackmailer Couple Arrested in Pune for Extorting Money

A sensational case of  cyber black mailing  and cheating has come to light in the city.  In this case registered at Pratap Nagar police station, the police have arrested 3 including the main accused IT professional husband and wife from Pune.
